General Overview

This Adventure was created and personally logged by Ross Bowden. Ross is a keen adventure rider with an extensive knowledge of the remote North Island track network.

The Taupo - New Plymouth Road Route is a day trip that includes some of the best public tarmac roads in the area. These include awesome sections through: Kuratau - Whaituhu Scenic Park, Whanganui National Park, The Forgotten Highway, and the Te Popo - Ratapiko Area.

Start/Finish Point

This is an A to B route. Starting at Taupo and ending in New Plymouth.

The GPX files are in this direction but it can be traveled in either direction.

Terrain includes

Awesome windy tarmac roads, one short hard pack metal road, with fantastic scenery, and a tunnel.

The gravel road included in this route is 12 km, that is currently being sealed.

Distance

308 km.

Max Fuel Leg

60 km into the route you will reach Turangi where fuel is available.

120 km into the route you will reach Taumarunui where fuel is available.

Travel Time

Average seat time is 5.0 hours at a steady pace allowing plenty of time to have a good look around some of the interesting places, including the Republic of Whangamomona.

Access Permission

This Road Route is recommended for fine weather. While it is possible to travel this route all year round, if there has been recent heavy rain there can be slippery sections.

Safety

While this is not considered a technical route it does include a few semi-remote areas so it is recommended to travel as a group with typical equipment including tools, spares and a PLB or emergency beacon.
