AdventureTokens™

AdventureTokens are markers on the map that indicate cool places to visit such as epic lookouts, iconic rivers and lakes, interesting historic places or weird and wacky landmarks. They can be used to plan your routes with interesting places to visit along the way, plus they offer the social aspect of Claiming AdventureTokens where you visit the AdventureToken, take a photo to prove you were there, then submit the photo to claim the AdventureToken and add it to your AdventureToken count.

Adventure Map Key

Route Grading

  • Tarmac Tarmac roads
  • Grade 1 Normally well groomed gravel roads that are more scenic rather than challenging
  • Grade 2 Normally good condition gravel roads or 4X4 tracks with a few minor challenging sections in the form of stream crossings or mildly rough terrain
  • Grade 3 Normally gravel roads or 4X4 tracks with a few moderate challenging sections in the form of river crossings, steep inclines, or rough terrain
  • Grade 4 Normally 4X4 tracks with multiple challenging sections in the form of river crossings, steep loose inclines, or generally very rough terrain
  • Grade 5 Normally highly challenging with multiple technical sections

Adventure Token Grading

  • Scenic Scenic AdventureTokens are placed at locations of high scenic value. This could be a high-altitude lookout, a mountain range, a picturesque lake, or similar.
  • Interest Interest AdventureTokens are placed at locations where there is something, you guessed it, interesting! This could be anything from strange rock formations, bizarre architecture, impressive landmarks, or similar.
  • Historic Historic AdventureTokens are placed at locations of historic significance. This could be anything from abandoned historic towns, gold mining relics, old bridges, or similar.
  • Challenge Challenge AdventureTokens are for the seriously adventurous adventurer! They are reached via challenging Grade 4 or Grade 5 tracks, and allow you to access some of the most remote and amazing locations in New Zealand.
  • Points Points AdventureTokens are for those that enjoy chasing points, and climbing up the AdventureTokens Leaderboard! They are generally not placed at spectacular locations, nor are they worth making a special trip for, however they are ideal for collecting points, and exploring new places.
  • Claimed Claimed When you claim an AdventureToken, it will appear green on the Adventure Map.

Accommodation Grading

  • Hut Red hut icons indicate a private hut that normally requires contacting the owner to prebook your accommodation.
  • Hut Green hut icons indicate a public hut such as a DOC hut. Check out the details on the Adventure Map to see if you need to prebook your accommodation.
  • Camp Red camping icons indicate a private campsite that normally requires contacting the owner to prebook your accommodation.
  • Camp Green camp icons indicate a public camping area such as a DOC campsite. Check out the details on the Adventure Map to see if you need to prebook your accommodation.

General

  • Fuel These fuel icons indicate places that provide petrol to fuel up.
